One of the best ways to discover Saint Petersburg is from the Neva river using one of the main flat-bottom boats that circle the city. One can truly appreciate how vast the historic city centre is, but also how beautiful and yet slightly austere it is - a fascinating sight. While there is an obvious reason for dubbing Saint Petersburg as the Venice of the North, it is totally unlike Venice and yet equally charming.
