Matsumoto-shi in the Nagano prefecture is located between the Japanese Alps and Utsukushigahara Heights. It houses the beautiful Matsumoto Castle (Matsumoto-jō), of which the most prominent part, the keep (tenshukaku), was completed in the 16th century. The castle is often referred to as the crow-castle, given its black color. It is listed as a National Treasure of Japan. The area is also famous for its many onsens (hot springs) like Tobira Onsen Miyojinkan, one of Japan’s best onsen resorts.
