Kunming is the capital of the Yunnan province. Situated at an altitude of 1900m on the Yungui plateau, a short hop away from the Tropic of Cancer, Kunming enjoys a mild climate all year round especially suited to the culture of various mushrooms, some of which, though edible, are “poisonous” (read, as I was told, that they make you see things unless you boil them for 20 minutes).

120 kilometers away from Kunming lies Shilin or Stone Forest that one can see starting on the road from Kunming, well ahead of the dedicated park itself. The Stone Forest park features cemented paths and other stairs to make the park accessible to everyone. Shilin is listed a a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the South China Karst.
