Courtesy of Åreskutan fell (mount Åre) in central Sweden, Åre has become the major centre for downhill skiing in Sweden and one of the leading Scandinavian ski resorts. Åre hosted the Alpine World Championships in 1954 and 2007.
Tourism in Åre started at the end of the XIXth century as King Oscar II ordered the construction of the railroad to Trondheim in Norway. With this new railroad many people came to Åre to breathe the area’s fresh air and walk atop Åreskutan. Quickly the first tourist station opened and hotels started to flourish in the area. In just about a century Åre has developed into a main winter and summer resort in Scandinavia. Åre is a very pleasant resort with great facilities and beautiful landscapes.
