The French Caribbean islands include Saint-Martin (half Dutch), Saint-Barthélémy, the Guadeloupe and the Martinique. The Martinique is one of the overseas departments of France (DOM). It is thus within EU and has Euro for currency which makes it pretty convenient, besides being French-speaking ;-)

The Martinique (of which Fort-de-France is the “capital” city) has a wide variety of landscapes thanks to a diverse vegetation consisting of lush tropical forests, rainforests, mangrove, etc, vast geological characteristics in particular the sadly famous volcano “Montagne Pelée” which had devastating eruptions in 1902, heavenly beaches, coral reefs, etc. This diversity offers a great amount of activities for a holiday, best enjoyed with a ti’punch here and there ;-) made of course with one of the local rums.

But the Martinique bears also very much the scars of slavery which raged in this part of the World under the authority of French, English, Portuguese, Danish, Dutch and North-Americans. Reminders of this shameful and shocking history are scattered across the island, in particular in the ruins of sugar refineries.

You will find in this gallery, pictures of Martinique: Fonds Saint-Denis, Anse Noire, Anse Couleuvre, Saint-Pierre, Robert, Anse des Salines, Diamant, the Matoutou Falaise, etc.
