Normandy is the region where I was born :) It is the home of camembert (not that cheap rip-off hergestellt in Germany, but the genuine camembert from Camembert), calvados and cider (cidre bouché)!

Normandy owes its name to the Vikings who settled there from the 9th century - a Viking is a North man. Probably the most famous of the Normans is Guillaume, Duke of Normandy who conquered England in 1066. The Bayeux Tapestry depicts with captivating details the Norman Conquest which lead Guillaume to the throne of England after the Battle of Hastings, about a thousand years ago.

Normandy is also where the Allied Forces landed on June 6th 1944. The D-day landing lead to the downfall of Nazi Germany and the liberation of Europe. Of all the Historical events that took place in Normandy, the IInd World War has left considerable scars throughout the region, of which many have been converted into memorials to the Men who gave their life so we could live free. The most poignant of all is certainly the American War Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer, facing Omaha Beach.
